“Your talents can take you up to this much. Beyond that circumstances pays a big role.” – Shah Rukh Khan
When you think of someone who’s made their #PassionToPaycheck dream a reality, Shah Rukh Khan is the first name that comes to mind. He is an actor, storyteller and an entrepreneur. Without any godfather in the industry, he struggled and managed to make his mark as the King Khan of Bollywood. Don’t you agree?
His journey to achieve that has been an interesting one. Shah Rukh Khan spoke about his #PassionToPaycheck story on the Signature Masterclass 3.0. Right from reminiscing about his first role on stage to how he became the King of Romance in Bollywood, he talks about it all, revealing facts that most of you might have never heard before.
You maybe a big SRK fan but we bet you may not know these lesser-known truths about him. Some of these will really surprise you!
SRK’s first stage performance was in a Ramlila
Like every Delhi kid, SRK grew up watching the Ramlila drama during Dussehra every year. No wonder his first every stage performance was on the Ramlila stage too. Can you guess what role he played?
The first ever dialogue delivered was ONE word
His first dialogue ever was delivered on the Ramlila stage too. Though it was just one word, it has a special place in his heart. SRK goes on to talk about how he spent all those winter evenings practising and performing in front of an audience. His very first audience!
His Hindi was not very strong when he was young
The man who has over 27 years of experience working in the Hindi film industry struggled with the language as a kid. He admitted to goofing up with his spelling in school. In fact, his mother once promised him a special reward (keep reading to know what it was) if he did well.
And he did succeed! He went on to score higher marks and was taken to watch the movie “Joshila”, which was a Yash Chopra film. What a curious coincidence that this was a movie of the man who would change SRK’s career someday!
“Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa” was NOT written for him
One of his most iconic movies “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa” was not really meant for him. But circumstance gave him the right opportunity and he took it up. Now that’s a good lesson for all of us to remember!
His first job paid him Rs.50
Much before he was doing 100 crore movies, he worked a job that paid him Rs.50. This was no Bollywood or acting job, but it was something he still took up on his journey to convert his #PassionToPaycheck.
A director once told him, “the best part about you is that you’re so ugly”
While he was beginning his career, he didn’t restrict himself to be the hero type. SRK remembers being called ugly and took it practically, which worked out quite well for him. Remember movies like Darr and Baazigar that won him so much acclaim despite him playing the villain.
The King of Romance didn’t want to do love stories
SRK didn’t want to star in love stories until Yash Chopra convinced him to. Chopra promised to write a movie that would suit him best. And here we are 23 years later with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) one of his greatest hits.
Can we all agree that success is all about taking chances in life!
Salman Khan was the only person to compliment him about DDLJ
All compliments and criticism aside, this is one comment he remembers even today. Salman Khan was the first one outside his movie team to tell him that DDLJ would be a great film.
And that’s not all, SRK, the storyteller goes on to talk much more about his #PassionToPaycheck during the Signature Masterclass. You can watch King Khan speak about it on the Viu app here
