“Shall we go to The Sassy Spoon?”
Speaking on behalf of every Mumbaikar out there who’s just looking for a good time, we know how difficult it can get to pick a spot to hang out. So when someone throws a recommendation your way, you treat it with a lot of skepticism. Thankfully, I still remember the pork ribs I’ve had at The Sassy Spoon, Bandra, years ago. Which is why, when this recommendation popped up, I just knew I had to follow through and relive those happy, finger-licking memories.
Upon entering the restaurant, you can’t help but think that The Sassy Spoon looks like a cross between a pub, a cafe and a restaurant. While practically vacant at first, the restaurant started filling up post 7pm, making us thank our stars that we put in an online reservation for a Wednesday night! The crowd was a mix of excited girl gangs, couples, families and colleagues hanging out after work.
As for the interiors, well, it looked a lot like they’ve been drawn right out of a story book. With bright wallpapers, funky prints, floral accented cutlery, you could easily confuse this place with the one Alice visited when she fell down the rabbit hole. Thankfully, the story only gets better with delicious cocktails and wholesome servings of food! So, sit back and scroll ahead, because I'm about to give you a whole lot of sassy spoilers!
The Smokey Sour
Alluring, exciting and mysterious; can there be a more gripping start than the Smokey Sour? This cocktail was made with Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky, aromatic bitters, rosemary smoke and a citrus mix. If you love your classics but you’re looking for a fun twist, this one is definitely the cocktail for you.
Sticky Pork Ribs
Always in the mood for pork ribs? Join the gang! The sticky pork ribs at The Sassy Spoon are made by slow cooking juicy pork with a gorgeous blend of spices that is guaranteed to melt in your mouth. The flavours, the sauce, the meat, the accompaniments! There’s no doubt in my mind that the way to my heart is through these ribs. Bone-Appetit!
For someone who loves coffee but wouldn’t pass off an opportunity to try a new cocktail, I’d say that coffee cocktails are a blessing in disguise! The Double Trouble is made of Smirnoff vodka, vanilla, Kahlua, cream and an espresso shot. A coffee-lover’s delight, this cocktail comes with all the punchiness of an espresso and leaves you with a deliciously creamy aftertaste.
Blackened Tenderloin Steak
The only way to follow up on a serving of delicious pork ribs is to order a plateful of juicy tenderloin steak. Cut to perfection, seasoned and seared, this succulent steak comes served with a delectable kasundi mustard mash and sauteed vegetables with a tarragon ginger jus. But if I were to put it simply, I would just call this dish, “absolutely delicious”.
Any seafood lover knows that it’s almost impossible to go wrong with a serving of fresh prawns, and the Cajun Prawns at The Sassy Spoon were really no different. Seasoned to perfection with cajun spices, these prawns were just buttery, juicy and absolutely gobble-worthy. Hungry for more? Trust us, by now you really should be saving space for dessert.
Dark Chocolate & Basil Fondant
There's usually very little occasion for a single herb to really express itself, but basil when paired with chocolate is a surprisingly delightful combination. This dessert comprises a chocolate fondant with liquid white chocolate and basil centre and is served with a basil pine nut ice cream. Try this one if your palate loves to experiment with flavours, alternatively, don’t try this one if you like your chocolate gooey and unadulterated.
You can always trust a red velvet cake to drive away your blues. The Sassy Stacks are a twist on red velvet cake served with a cappuccino foam and raspberry caviar. A classic dessert with spoonfuls of fluffy cappuccino frosting, this dessert is simply the best way to end your day!
After our spoons were licked clean and glasses rendered dry, my friends and I sat back and discussed what most foodies generally do: “where should we meet up next?”. And just like that, this review ended pretty much the same way it began...
“Shall we just come back to The Sassy Spoon?”
Tl;dr: If you’re looking for a spot to hang out with your friends, or even family, The Sassy Spoon at Powai totally delivers! With generous portions, delicious cocktails and an absolutely great vibe it has all the makings of your favourite go-to spot. The service was good even on a busy night and the staff were very friendly. This is the kind of place that will make you feel welcome even while you wait for your table outside.
